Other Educational Programs
The Department of Psychiatry offers a wide variety of educational programs.
Pre-Doctoral Clinical Child Psychology Internship
The internship program of Virginia Treatment Center for Children (VTCC) is accredited by the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation. The program is designed to provide training in the full continuum of care required to treat children and adolescents with serious emotional disturbances. Four funded positions are available beginning July 1 and ending June 30.
Post-Doctoral Child Psychology Fellowship
In addition to an APA-approved predoctoral internship, postdoctoral fellowships have been in place at VTCC for over a decade. There are currently two fully funded fellowship positions. Each fellowship position is a one-year experience designed to promote the professional development of child clinical psychologists. The training year provides fellows with intensive clinical and supervisory experiences across the continuum of mental health services for children, adolescents and families. Applicants with sign language skills are encouraged to apply for this position. For further information contact Dr. Linker via e-mail at
or by phone, 804-628-0088.
Post-Doctoral Clinical Health Psychology
The VCU Health System Post-doctoral Training Program in Clinical Health Psychology was developed to provide advanced specialty training to graduates of APA-accredited doctoral programs and internships in professional psychology. Fellows are selected for excellence in generalist mental health background as well as for knowledge and experience in health psychology in either or both research and clinical service. The program prepares fellows for careers as clinical health psychology specialists, recognizing the important role that clinical practitioners have to play in informing and shaping relevant clinical research.
Practicum in Clinical Health Psychology
Social Work Internship, Outpatient
The Ambulatory Psychiatry Clinic emphasizes teaching, research and training to a variety of disciplines (residents, medical students, social work and psychology interns) and provides a range of psychiatric services that include General Psychiatry and Specialty Clinics, Individual, Family and Group Psychotherapy for adults over the age of 18 years who are financially screened through the hospital or have compatible private insurance.
The Ambulatory Psychiatry Clinic serves as a field placement site for the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work, accepting graduate social work students during their concentration curriculum or 2nd year of studies. Social work interns will have direct practice with a variety of populations that have behavioral and emotional problems, and will provide bio-psychosocial assessments and treatment strategies from practice coursework. Interns will have an outpatient caseload, develop psycho-educational groups and assist with case management services. In addition, there are many other training activities that students will be involved in, such as bimonthly case conferences, psychiatry grand round lectures and opportunities to participate in existing evaluation and specialty clinics.
