Other Educational Programs

The Department of Psychiatry offers a wide variety of educational programs.

  • Pre-Doctoral Clinical Child Psychology Internship
    The internship program of Virginia Treatment Center for Children (VTCC) is accredited by the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation. The program is designed to provide training in the full continuum of care required to treat children and adolescents with serious emotional disturbances. Four funded positions are available beginning July 1 and ending June 30. MORE 

  • Post-Doctoral Clinical Health Psychology
    The VCU Health System Post-doctoral Training Program in Clinical Health Psychology was developed to provide advanced specialty training to graduates of APA-accredited doctoral programs and internships in professional psychology. Fellows are selected for excellence in generalist mental health background as well as for knowledge and experience in health psychology in either or both research and clinical service. The program prepares fellows for careers as clinical health psychology specialists, recognizing the important role that clinical practitioners have to play in informing and shaping relevant clinical research. MORE
  • Practicum in Clinical Health Psychology
  • Social Work Internship, Outpatient
    The Ambulatory Psychiatry Clinic emphasizes teaching, research and training to a variety of disciplines (residents, medical students, social work and psychology interns) and provides a range of psychiatric services that include General Psychiatry and Specialty Clinics, Individual, Family and Group Psychotherapy for adults over the age of 18 years who are financially screened through the hospital or have compatible private insurance. 

    The Ambulatory Psychiatry Clinic serves as a field placement site for the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work, accepting graduate social work students during their concentration curriculum or 2nd year of studies. Social work interns will have direct practice with a variety of populations that have behavioral and emotional problems, and will provide bio-psychosocial assessments and treatment strategies from practice coursework. Interns will have an outpatient caseload, develop psycho-educational groups and assist with case management services. In addition, there are many other training activities that students will be involved in, such as bimonthly case conferences, psychiatry grand round lectures and opportunities to participate in existing evaluation and specialty clinics. 
  • Social Work Internship, VTCC
    Virginia Treatment Center for Children – Inpatient Unit serves as a field placement site for the Virginia Commonwealth School of Social Work, accepting graduate social work students during their concentration year, or second year studies. Students are part of the interdisciplinary team of psychiatrist, psychologists, social workers, and recreational and occupational therapists who work to stabilize children and adolescents in psychiatric crisis. Students are given clinical opportunities to participate in individual, family, and group therapy. Students are also involved in case-management services that include identifying follow-up services for patients discharged from the acute unit. Students participate in various training activities to include multidisciplinary didactics and psychiatry grand rounds.
