Approaching psychiatry from a new perspective is vital to how we treat mental illness.

Dr. James Levenson, award winning faculty member

The core of the VCU Department of Psychiatry's mission is to train tomorrow’s mental health professionals. Our program balances brain science and therapeutic training to inspire the next generation of psychiatrists and psychologists. VCU provides the knowledge and support that help our students achieve here, and beyond our walls.

  • The VCU Department of Psychiatry educates 680 students a year in VCU's School of Medicine through residencies and fellowships. Special training programs include post-doctoral psychiatry, M.D./Ph.D. programs and social work internships.
  • We have one of the nation’s strongest psychotherapy education programs, emphasizing a balanced biopsychosocial perspective through a progressive series of didactic seminars, a structured set of clinical experiences and a network of about 60 psychotherapy supervisors who observe live and recorded therapy sessions via a brand-new, state-of-the-art CISCO system.
  • Our faculty members lead their fields, with countless regional, national and international awards that recognize their work and the VCU program. We also have faculty advisors and board members serving a number of distinguished community and government organizations.
  • Our mentor program includes prominent community physicians who volunteer their time as clinical faculty to help give real-life training to our students.
  • We have a national reputation for excellence through innovations such as the Medical Psychiatry and Health Psychology program, developed as the first accredited fellowship program in the country that trains psychiatrists to take care of the medically ill.
  • We offer the Summer Institute in Psychiatry for medical students seeking an exciting and intensive experience in psychiatry, covering additional topics that may not be presented in a traditional curriculum.
