Highlighted current faculty members:

Kenneth Kendler, MD  is the current Director of the Virginia Institute of Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics. He has published over 400 peer reviewed articles and has received national and international awards for his work. He serves as editor of the esteemed psychiatric journal Psychological Medicine.


Chris Kogut, M.D. serves as the Director of the resident graduate program. Dr. Kogut was named Richmond Magazine's Heroes in 2011 for his work in providing access to mental health care in underserved populations across the region. His expertise began in in our social work division within the Department. His enthusiasm for clinical care, patient services and volunteerism is evident in his teaching style.


Susan Kornstein, MD is Executive Director of the VCU Mood Disorders Institute.  She is recognized as a pioneer in gender and psychopharmacology research. She is also an expert in depression and anxiety. She serves as the current editor in chief of The Journal of Women's Health.


James Levenson, MD is the Chair of our Division of Consultation and Liaison Psychiatry. He is the editor of the American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychosomatic Medicine.  He is also a deputy editor of the journal Psychosomatics. 


Michael Neale, Ph.D. is an expert in statistical modeling and psychiatric genetics at the Virginia Institute of Psychiatric and Behavioral Genetics. Dr. Neale has won numerous research awards for his work in twin studies and addictions disorders. He collaborates with researchers across both campuses and across the globe, most recently he partnered with a researcher in a bone marrow study at VCU’s Massey Cancer Center.


Joel Silverman, M.D., James Asa Shield Endowed Professor
is the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. He began his career as fellow in our Department. He has served as Chair of the Residency Review Committee in Psychiatry, ACGME, won the Outstanding Teaching Award in Behavioral Science at VCU multiple years in his career and was named one of Richmond’s Top Docs as recently as 2011. Dr. Silverman still rounds in the ER on weekends, he has a large clinical practice and is a national expert in forensic psychiatry.

Arandhana (Bela) Sood, M.D.  is a member of the National Society of Professors for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and a member of the National Psychiatry Residency Review Committee. Bela is a national expert in children’s mental health. She still sees patients daily and brings innovative research and educational expertise  to our department.
